Matched face to face tapered roller bearings handle axial force in both directions and large radial loads while maintaining accurate centering. They are manufactured together as a set that includes two tapered roller bearings, and a precision machined set of shims. This configuration is more complicated to use correctly and is less popular than the back to back arrangement. Its main advantage is that the axial clearance in the bearing will decrease as it heats. It is more prone to overheating without control of heat flow. Still, it is an excellent choice in equipment that requires tight positioning control, such as machining tools with forced cooling systems.
